Making It Official. Making It Permanent.
In many blended families, the legal relationship lags far behind the real one. A stepparent who has raised a child, shown up at every school event, navigated every medical appointment, and been present in every meaningful way may still have no legal standing in that child’s life. A stepparent adoption closes that gap-permanently and completely.
At Baysinger Henson & Cresswell PLLC, we help families complete the legal process of stepparent adoption – translating the commitment that already exists into a parent-child relationship that the law will recognize and protect forever.
Understanding Stepparent Adoptions
Consent Requirements
Many stepparent adoptions involve the consent of the child’s noncustodial parent. When consent is available, the adoption process is often more straightforward and can move efficiently toward finalization.
When Consent Is Not Available
In some cases, a biological parent’s rights may need to be terminated before the adoption can proceed. Oklahoma law provides several circumstances under which termination may be appropriate, including abandonment or failure to maintain a relationship with the child.
